Tim Cook Touts iTunes Music Festival, Retail Expansion

Tim Cook kicked off today’s Apple press event by talking about the iTunes Music Festival, which is now in its seventh year. The event, held in London, features thirty nights of performances featuring artists like Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake, Elton John, and more. Cook also closed the announcement with a few words about Apple’s retail operations.

Cook pointed out that the iTunes Music Festival is one of the many things Apple does that doesn’t get a boatload of attention, but clearly the demand is there: since Apple doesn’t charge for tickets, more than 20 million people have applied for tickets to attend the shows. The event is held at the historical Roadhouse theater in London.

But if you can’t make it, Cook pointed that you don’t even have to be there in person. Unlike today’s event (cough), the iTunes Music Festival is being live streamed in over 100 countries. To give a little idea of what attendees and livestreamers can expect, Cook presented a videos showing Lady Gaga singing in the opening performance.

Cook then spoke about Apple’s retail operations. He mentioned that Apple’s expanding its “footprint” outside the U.S., but added that some of the stores here at home are being upgraded. As an example, he pointed out that the Apple Store at Stanford would now be significantly larger, and he encouraged attendees to stop by after the show. Little else was said.
