Gamers will tell you that you can’t show up to a tabletop event without a backpack full of books and an armful of treats. We may not be able to help you find the right snacks for your RPG party (although Red Vines and Mountain Dew are tested favorites), but we can help you stay organized with some tools that every gamer should have on their iPad. Combine these apps with digital copies of your player handbooks and you won’t even need that backpack anymore.
DM Tools ($2.99) Every dungeon master (DM) needs a good way to keep organized. There are so many ins, outs and what-have-yous that it is hard to keep it all straight. This handy tool lets users track initiative order, character statuses, and hit points in one location. You can keep track of your lore notes, loot items, experience point calculators, and more. Design encounters by creating templates and lists of players, non-player characters, and monsters. You can also import your own avatar images and share templates with others as XML files. Basically, everything a DM needs to keep track of the game can be found or added with this app.
RPG Calc HD ($1.99) When you are rolling for combat, do you find yourself loosing track of your dice results, or needing other players to total up your score for you? If so, you need the RPG Calc. This helpful app keeps track of the math so you can just roll to your hearts content. You can either roll dice in real life and input the information into the calculator, or use the featured dice rollers to get the number and then add up your totals. This app also keeps track of your recent rolls, so if you happen to be needing to roll five d6s for damage, you’ll be able to see how many rolls you’ve done so far.
The Dicenomicon ($4.99) This fancy dice app may seem a bit excessive, but so do brushed steel dice, so don’t let anyone tell you you’re overdoing it here. Use the Dicenomicon to play d20-based RPGs, or experiment with strange new dice shapes, like d14, d30 and d60. This app will also help you calculated die results, modify dice for averages, and more. You can create individual game rooms and integrate your character sheet to keep track of your abilities, stats, hit points, and more. You won’t have to keep erasing your character sheet every time you level up.
RPG Buddy ($2.99) A DM has a lot to worry about when keeping track of player’s combat. If you are dealing with a horde of Troglodytes, a flock of sucubi and six real players, you will need to keep track of initiative, rounds, hit points and more. This app makes it easy to keep track of player and monster initiatives, so that you can be prepared for an encounter ahead of time. You can also track hit points and delete monsters from the list once they’ve been eliminated in the game and include status of spell effects. This is the perfect way to organize your encounters without having to drag around extra pencil and paper.
