Although they probably didn’t pick the best day to release it, Yelp updated their iOS and Android apps on Monday with a revamped Nearby tab that gives rival Foursquare a run for its money.
The Yelp Web Log announced Monday that the latest version of Yelp for iOS and Android will help users decide where their next meal will take place with an overhaul to the Nearby feature.
“Our updated Nearby tab now offers suggestions based on your location, previous Yelp check-ins and reviews, and Yelp friends as well as other data like the time of day and even the weather,” the blog post notes. “At Yelp, we have an entire community of reviewers that we rely on to suggest places you might not know about, as well as places that you and your friends love. Maybe you’ll discover something new, maybe you’ll understand what the neighborhood has to offer, or maybe you’ll be reminded of an old favorite.”
Sure, that might sound an awful lot like Foursquare, but with Yelp revealing that 45 percent of its searches now come from mobile apps, the company probably had no choice but to head in that direction. (Pun intended.)
In addition to this change, Yelp 6.8.0 for iOS also updates the Events page, which now shows the most popular events right on the Nearby tab. “Now you have no excuse for staying home with the cats this Saturday night,” the app description remarks.
Yelp 6.8.0 is now available from the App Store and the free, universal app requires iOS 5.0 or later.
