The once-awesome built-in YouTube app is waving goodbye with the arrival of iOS 6 this month, but that isn’t stopping Google from trying to build a better machine on its own — complete with advertising.
The Official YouTube Blog has announced the availability of its new YouTube app for the iPhone and iPod touch, arriving only a day before Apple is expected to introduce its latest iPhone with iOS 6, which will summarily banish the current YouTube app from existence.
“For all you diehard YouTube fans out there who can’t get enough YouTube on your mobile, we’ve got some great news: starting today, you can download the official YouTube app for iPhone and iPod touch from the App Store, bringing you more of the videos you love and more ways to share them with the people you care about,” the blog post reads.
Promising “tens of thousands more videos” complete with a new channel guide, search tools and social sharing to Google+, Facebook, Twitter, email or SMS, the all-new YouTube app appears to correct much of the neglect from the existing Apple-developed app, but the YouTube blog fails to point out that ads will be part of the experience from here on out, much to the chagrin of many.
Also MIA is an iPad-optimized version, which YouTube claims will be available “in the coming months” — kind of a bummer considering the existing app is going bye-bye when iOS 6 is unleashed this month.
In any event, the new YouTube for iPhone and iPod touch is now available free from the App Store and requires iOS 4.3 or later.
